Turnaround is Changing

Developing

As most of you will know, we introduced the current 4 week deadline system around 1 year ago in the hope that it would make turnaround times less unpredictable. To that end it has definitely been successful. However since we've incorporated the 4 week model we haven't hit maximum quantity once (on reversal or negative). As you can imagine that is very wasteful and thus costly when it comes to chemicals. So from now on we'll be pushing the developing deadline to every 5 weeks to try and combat the waste.

Scanning

The good news is we've been doing plenty of scanning! From now on we'll be scanning all month round (apart from developing week obviously). Basically what that means is the deadline no longer applies to scanning. Just send your film is whenever you like and we'll scan them as soon as humanly possible!

16mm Services Are Go!

After calling around trying to get some 16mm reversal processed it became immediately apparent that nobody is really doing it anymore. Well not in the UK anyway. All labs I tried to contact either didn't pick up the phone, didn't message back or if they did message back required a minimum order of at least 1000ft. Basically a sorry state of affairs for people like myself who only shoot small amounts of 16mm reversal film each year.

It's for this reason I've set up an E-6 and D-19 developing service using my 5L 50ft tanks. Obviously 100ft rolls need to be split down the middle and a frame is lost in the process but it's definitely better than having no service at all! I'm also quite pleased with the results (compared to using my 16mm 100ft tank). I could never get good results with that 16mm tank and it has always put me off processing 16mm films for my customers. However I have been pleasantly surprised with processing 16mm in my 5L 50ft tanks.

I will post some videos when I have more time but for now I just wanted to give you 16mm reversal shooters a processing option. Perhaps if it goes well I might even start stocking 16mm reversal film, but perhaps I'm getting a little ahead of myself. Lets wait and see what happens.

Scanning gets Simpler

Today I've been streamlining the scanning options on the website. So now there is only one Workprinter and one Muller listing with multiple choice check boxes. These check boxes allow you to select frame rate, mask and perhaps most importantly format. So for general purpose use you have the H.264 option. Editors can choose between either DNx or ProRes depending on what software you're using. Lastly the archiving crowd have the BMP or TIFF image sequences to choose from. Take a look at the revised listings here and here. If you want restoration with your Muller scans now you just need to use this listing in unison with the Muller one. Hopefully this should help simplify things for future scanning. I also removed the length selection box because nobody really uses it. The quantity box essentially does the same thing. Just remember quantity is per 50ft. Enjoy!

Neg Movements in 2015

12/1/2015

Colour neg is in full swing as we go into 2015. We're selling Vision 3 50D and Vision 3 500T on the website at the moment. Hopefully we'll have some 200T available soon as well. We received 7 neg films for processing this month. Fingers crossed the numbers will climb and we'll be able to bring down the neg developing costs a bit. At the moment I stuck between using a 1L C-41 kit which takes a long time to process with or a 5L kit which for just 7 films is a terrible waste of chemicals. We'd be pretty happy if we could get the neg numbers up to the 12-18 mark each month. Then we'll be able to reduce the neg processing price. As always it's a team effort so please send us your neg films. Here are some we developed and scanned in December. Remember to full screen and hit HD, enjoy!

Closed for Christmas

Hi everyone. We're closed from the 18th of December and wont open again until the 5th of January. As you all know however we don't ever really close... That is to say you can still post your films to us and you can also make orders over the festive season. We'll ship orders out as and when we can but please be aware our postage will be sparse until we return on the 5th. The last organized postal run is on Wednesday at midday so if you need film before Christmas order some now. I look forward to seeing your Christmas films on the other side!

More Turnaround Changes

Turnaround changes are coming into force this December to help make the return of your film more speedy. We'll be developing all film on the first Monday of each and every month regardless of intake quantity from now on. It's up to you guys and girls to get your film to us a few days before that Monday deadline so we can catalog them in good time. For example I'll be developing Monday December 1st... You guys need to get film to me by the 29th of November. If you miss the developing deadline you will get bumped into the following months batch. I'm hoping this will help simplify the whole turnaround situation in future. Processing will take around a week as will all the scanning (as it usually does). Over the following 6 month we will also be looking into way of reducing this 2 week processing and scanning window. It's time to get streamlined folks! It probably goes without saying but intake and processing updates are no longer required here on the blog with this new approach. I'll update the turnaround section of the website very soon. Have a good weekend all!

Process & Scanning Update

Novembers batch of processing and scanning is all done. Please note if you sent any colour neg film for developing we haven't done yours yet because we're waiting for enough to come in to run a batch of C-41. It's early days for the colour neg service, we hope it picks up so we can at least develop a 1L batch every month.

15 out of 36 in this week. It looks like the winter crunch is hitting with only one cart in last week. If you have any film that needs processing please send it in to help build up Decembers batch!

Intake Update

Hi everyone, Decembers batch is filling up nicely already with 14 out of 36 films in. I'm finishing off the developing for Novembers batch tonight and will be spooling, splicing and scanning everything in over the next week and a half. We have a lot to scan again but I'm positive I can work through them quicker this month now I've got to grips with the Muller's post production workflow. Thanks for keeping the film coming in over the winter month!

Process & Scanning Update

8/11/2014

You'll all be very happy to know the October batch of processing and scanning is complete. It's been pretty darn hectic since we announced the Muller scans (we had over 3000ft to do in the first batch). Combine that with a new learning curve, some teething problems and a virus or two (health not computer) and the work soon mounted up. I'm back on top of things now so it's business as usual as of Monday. I'd also like to say thanks for you patience. I'm sure you'll agree it was worth it when you see the new scans. Let me know what you think!

I'm not going to be posting eBay ID's or names here anymore after batch completion because we've had a few customers take a disliking to it. It would be ok if it was just one or two customers but we're approaching double digits now and it's getting hard for me to keep track so I'm going to have to put a stop to it. I think 80% of people still message me and don't actually use the updates on here anyway so perhaps it's not such a big deal. Although I apologies to the folks that use it and find it useful. I'm planning to start a different system using dates instead of names. Stay tuned for that. Hope you're all having a great weekend.
